Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Scuba diving gear
  1. Step 1

The first thing to look at when trying to identify French grunt fish is the yellow stripes on their body. This particular fish actually has two sets of yellow strips running its length. . One set runs diagonally from the gills all the way down the back, while the other set run parallel to the length of the body. The second set is generally lighter in color making it possible to see the blue-gray body behind the stripes.

  2. Step 2

Fins are another way to help identify French grunt fish. While the body varies in its yellow color based on the stripes, the fins are a solid yellow.

  3. Step 3

Another thing that sets French grunt fish apart from other varieties is the fact that it rarely travels alone. Generally these fish can be found in schools, where hundreds of others of the same type are located. This can help you when identifying, since seeing only one or two of the fish may indicate it is not a French grunt fish.

  4. Step 4

Location is the final aspect of identifying this type of fish. Generally they are found in the Caribbean, Bahamas or off the coast of Florida. They tend to hover around reefs and shipwrecks, since these can provide protection from larger fish.
