How to Disarm an Attacker with a Stick

Advanced martial art techniques and self defense workshops teach students how to defend against weapon attacks. The first level of defense is to escape whenever possible. The next level of defense is disarming the assailant.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Quickly take visual measurement of the distance between yourself and the attacker.

  2. Step 2

    Determine which side the attack is coming from by watcher the attacker’s shoulder movement.

  3. Step 3

    If the stick strike from the attacker comes from the right side, begin to raise your left arm for defense. Apply the same technique for a left side attack.

  4. Step 4

    As the attacker swings his arm and the stick, extend your arm outward and tightly grab his wrist.

  5. Step 5

    Keep your arm extended, thereby keeping the stick out of striking distance.

  6. Step 6

    Quickly grab the stick with your free hand, removing the stick from the attacker in a backward down motion.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you are armed, immediately inflict to the striking hand of the attacker.
  • Control the assailant’s weapon.
  • Counter to neutralize the weapon.
  • Only counter after you have disarmed the assailant.
