How to Store Scotch

Store Scotch

Scotch has always been considered a special category of whisky. Made only in Scotland, scotch is often confused with other types of whisky in Europe, where the name is used alternatively. Whether referring to a single type or to all types of whisky, preserving and storing a bottle of it requires some planning. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Keep the scotch away from direct sources of heat. Anything over 70 degrees Fahrenheit is potentially damaging to the quality of the scotch, especially if the temperature fluctuates or if it keeps increasing. If you have a basement, that may be the ideal place to keep the whisky, as it is often cool enough year round.

    • 2

Store the scotch in its original box if possible. This will keep direct light away from the liquid. Light damages the quality of scotch and can speed up the deterioration of the drink. If you’re storing your scotch inside a bar, make sure the bottle is away from automatic lights that turn on every time you open the bar door.

    • 3

Keep all bottles inside a closed bar to further protect them from heat and light. Make sure the bottle stands up straight, rather than on its side, to avoid the liquid coming in contact with the cap. Both metal and cork affect the quality and composition of scotch.

    • 4

Close the bottle cap tightly after pouring a drink, and do it as fast as possible. Air oxidizes scotch significantly, affecting flavor and texture.

Tips & Warnings

  • There are no hard and fast rules about how fast you should consume scotch after the bottle has been opened. A year seems like a good general guideline, but if stored properly, scotch will keep much longer than that.
