While we're here, let us enjoy the wide open spaces. There are rocks to climb and sights to see you won't see anywhere else. This type of adventure is easy on the budget too! Savor your surroundings along the way.
Desert sage brush
I remember my first time ever in Nevada. It was years ago in early July, to enjoy a short visit with my sister, Lisa. Just prior to my plane landing, it had rained. Rain is rare enough in this area. Rarer still is a good soaking rain in July! Everywhere Lisa and I went that afternoon I could smell the most unusual scent on the fresh breeze. She had to explain to me that what I smelled was the scent of the sage which grows wild everywhere in the Nevada desert. That aroma made a profound impression on my memory. As a result, that moment in time was etched upon my brain and Nevada became for me a happy place.
We are entering the wet season here in the northern Nevada desert. With an average yearly rainfall of less than ten inches each year; these are to be celebrated. You see, in the nearly two years we have lived here in Fallon, it has rained on occasion and yet that smell was undetectable to me. Finally, the scent event has happened again! Sometime during the night Sunday Fallon received a good soaking rain shower; the first real rain since last spring. Monday morning as I left the house, once again the rain cleaned breeze was heavy laden with the intoxicating scent of sage. This morning, Tuesday, the cool morning breeze still smelled fresh and clean; with the scent of sage still lingering!
