A dimple - a subtle fold or crease below a tie's knot - can add a touch of class to your outfit, and helps to make a strong first impression at the same time. Carefully dimpling your tie not only makes your tie look clean, but helps to make you look all the more professional.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Tie the tie almost to completion: slip the end of the tie under the knot, but do not tighten it.

  2. Step 2

Grip the tie under the knot, with the thumb on one side, and the index finger on the other.

  3. Step 3

Squeeze your thumb and index finger together, so that the tie's fabric forms a dimple.

  4. Step 4

Pull down the tie down, to tighten the knot: pull the narrow end down, and slide the knot up.

  5. Step 5

Fluff up the two sides on either side of the dimple, to set it into place.

Tips & Warnings
  • Wider ties generally allow for a fuller, deeper dimple. At the same time, lighter and solid colors tend to show dimples better than darker or patterned ties. Dimples on narrow, light or patterned ties, however, may provide a subtle effect, as per your preferences. And remember that some neckties simply won't hold dimples - simply try another tie.
