In order to appreciate wine, you must be able to distinguish the flavor and aroma layers that combine to create the ultimate wine tasting experience. The right glass shape will enable you to taste wine the best way--here's how.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Fluted glass (thin and tall)
  • Glass with bowl shape at bottom
  • Glass with tulip or egg shaped bottom, smaller than above
  1. Step 1

Decide what type of wine you will serve: Champagne/sparkling, red/Burgundy or white/rose.

  2. Step 2

Educated yourself to the importance of your choice. When wine is poured, there is an evaporation process that occurs. Aroma (layers) are formed, heaviest at the bottom and lightest on the top (and, of course, the medium will be in the middle).

  3. Step 3

Choose your glass based on your wine decision. A fluted glass should be chosen for a champagne or sparkling wine. A large glass with a bowl-shaped bottom would be the right choice for a red or heavier wine.
A smaller sized glass with a tulip- or egg-shaped bottom can be used for a white or rose.

  4. Step 4

The shape will now determine your ability to distinguish the various aromas, and will increase your ability to taste the multitude of flavors.

Tips & Warnings
  • Pleasant smell equals pleasant taste.
  • your ability to smell is enhanced by a proper wine glass.
