How to Organize Neighborhood Basketball Games
It's the basketball off-season and your kid is itching to get into some basketball games (or you are itching to get them out of the house and away from the TV). You know it takes a number of players to get a game going. You also know that kids don't do anything unless it's organized for them. The purpose of this article is to help take matters into you own hands--organize a neighborhood basketball group.
Instructions

-
1
Determine what age group you want to play. As a guide, you can use an age range of about 3 years.
-
2
Decide if you want this to be a mixed genders or just one gender. Do not underestimate girls in the game of basketball.
-
-
3
Determine where games will be played. You can choose to play in a local park, but the beauty of a neighborhood league is to play in the driveway or backyard.
-
4
Develop a list of potential players with input from your kids and others in the neighborhood.
-
5
Talk to the kids and parents about what night(s) will work best for everyone. Choose a time and place that everyone will meet. If you decide to rotate houses, set a schedule for hosting.
-
6
The host should set up a fun environment for the players. Have music and plenty of water available.
-
7
End the night on a high note by giving a treat to all of the kids. This can be as simple as a popsicle or you can go as far as having the kids build their own sundaes in your kitchen.
-
8
As a parent, feel the satisfaction that you have provided a safe, active, fun activity for your children and others in the neighborhood.

Tips & Warnings
Feel confident that kids will love to do this--how many times do you see kids shooting by themselves in their driveways? They will jump at the chance to get involved.
Build a rapport with the other parents and share the hosting of the games.
Be sure to stress sportsmanship and let them know that poor sportsmanship will result in them not being invited in the future.
