How to Cook a Beef Pot Roast in a Crock Pot

  1. Step 1

If you don't already have one, go to the grocery store to purchase your beef pot roast as well as any other supplies needed to prepare your meal.

  2. Step 2

If your roast is frozen, thaw it prior to cooking. This can be done by placing it in the refrigerator for 24 to 36 hours prior to cooking. It can also be done by putting it through the defrost cycle of a microwave oven.

  3. Step 3

Prepare the vegetables that you want to cook along with your roast. Potatoes should be cut into one-quarter inch slices or into cubes about 1" (or smaller) in size. Onions should be cut into slices. Carrots should be cut into one-eighth inch slices. Celery should be cut into about one-half inch pieces. Use baby broccoli florets. Mushrooms should be sliced or whole; not in pieces.

  4. Step 4

Open one can of golden mushroom soup to use as sauce for your beef roast.

  5. Step 5

Season the roast on both sides with one tablespoon of Season-All salt and one teaspoon or Seasoned Pepper.

  6. Step 6

Cut roast, if necessary, to make certain it will fit into the crock pot. Layer the meat as little as possible to avoid lengthening the time required for cooking.

  7. Step 7

Place one-half cup of water in the bottom on the crock pot.

  8. Step 8

Turn on the crock pot and set it at high.

  9. Step 9

Pour one-half of the mushroom soup into the crock pot.

  10. Step 10

Pour half of the dry onion soup mix into the crock pot.

  11. Step 11

Place one-half of the prepared vegetables into the crock pot.

  12. Step 12

Put the seasoned roast into the crock pot.

  13. Step 13

Place the other half of the prepared vegetables into the crock pot.

  14. Step 14

Place the other half of the mushroom soup into the crock pot.

  15. Step 15

Pour the other half of the dry onion soup mix on top of everything.

  16. Step 16

Pour one-half cup of water on top and then close the crock pot tightly.

  17. Step 17

Cook the beef roast on high for between four and six hours, depending upon the size of the roast and the degree of doneness you desire such as medium or medium well. Check the roast regularly until it meets your expectations. If it appears to be cooking too quickly, turn the crock pot on to low to finish. If it cooks faster than you want, put the crock pot on warm until you are ready to serve.

  18. Step 18

Remove the roast from the crock pot and plate it.

  19. Step 19

Remove the vegetables from the crock pot and prepare them for serving.

  20. Step 20

You can use the natural sauce from the roast and veggies, as is, or you can make a gravy with it using your favorite gravy recipe.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make a list before you go to the grocery market so that you don't forget anything needed for your meal. If you thaw a roast on the countertop, make certain that the kitchen temperature isn't too hot and that the meat is not left out of the refrigerator for more than a few hours. Thoroughly clean all vegetables before using them in your meal. You can substitute regular mushroom soup for golden mushroom if you prefer. You can substitute cream of chicken, cream of broccoli, or cheese broccoli soup for mushroom soup if your family does not like mushrooms. Add your own seasonings to the dish to make it your own creation. Cheaper cuts of beef will cook better at a lower temperature over a longer amount of time.
  • Do not thaw a roast overnight on the countertop. Be careful not to overcook the meat or veggies, lest they become tough and/or difficult to eat. Do not leave the crock pot unattended for long periods of time as it could short circuit and cause a fire.
