The foil could very well be the single most important piece of equipment when you are fencing. Let’s face it: you aren’t going to be able to fence without a foil, unless you are sabre or epee fencing. With so much importance being placed on the foil, choosing the right one is essential. Here is how to choose a foil for fencing.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

How to Choose a Foil for Fencing

  1. Step 1

Determine if you want to purchase a pre-assembled foil or one that is custom made. Pre-assembled foils are usually great for beginners, but as you gain experience, you will develop unique preferences for your foil and probably want to have one custom made.

  2. Step 2

Determine what type of handle you would like to have on your foil. The French grip is very popular and particularly recommended for beginners. The French grip gives ample control over the Foil, but some people prefer a foil handle with “pistol grips” to help protect against being disarmed.

  3. Step 3

Choose a foil made of a durable metal alloy. All blades are prone to breaking, but cheap blades (particularly from China) are far more likely to break. Cheap foils are ok for every day use, but make sure to have a more durable foil during competitions to reduce the likelihood of having a broken blade.

Tips & Warnings
  • It is generally a good idea to start with a quality, low-cost foil for learning how to fence, then investing more money into a superior foil as you gain experience.
