How to Do Right and Left Leads in Step Aerobics

Right and left leads are common steps used when choreographing a step aerobics routine. They are used to help change which foot comes up onto the step first in a variety of commonly used step aerobics moves. Below are the steps for using right and left leads in a Basic Step pattern (up, up, down, down step).

Instructions

    Right and Left Lead

  1. Step 1

    Right lead basic step.Have the step in front of you. Step up with the right foot. Bring the left foot up to meet it so both feet are on the step. Then step down with the right foot and then the left.

  2. Step 2

    Left lead basic step. Step up with the left foot. Bring the right foot up to meet it so both feet are on the step. Then step down with the left foot and then the right.

  3. Step 3

    Changing from a right lead to a left lead.Step up with the right foot. Bring the left foot up to meet it so both feet are on the step. Then step down with the right foot. Then bring your left foot off the step but instead of stepping on it tap the left toe on the floor. Then step right back up with the left foot.

  4. Step 4

    Changing from a left lead to a right lead.Step up with the left foot. Bring the right foot up to meet it so both feet are on the step. Then step down with the left foot. Then bring your right foot off the step but instead of stepping on it tap the right toe on the floor. Then step right back up with the right foot.

  5. Step 5

    Putting the right and left lead change into a pattern. Try doing four right lead basic steps (step one). On the fourth follow the instructions in step three to change to a left lead. Do four left lead basic steps and then follow the instructions to change from a left lead to a right lead.

  6. Step 6

    Follow the instructions in step five but just do two and then one basic step and change lead legs each time. This lead leg change can also be used with a “V” step. You can also add knee lifts or leg lifts to this pattern.
