Taekwondo, the first martial art to become an official Olympic sport, employs sharp, rigid kicks and punches. Originating in Korea, the popularity of this martial art has surpassed all others in its spread throughout the Western World, attracting both adult and child students.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Practice the traditional lead-up to the sidekick. The reverse hook kick in Taekwondo begins with the same body position as the sidekick.

  2. Step 2

Start with one side back, your arms in guard position and your balance evenly distributed between both feet. Draw the knee closest to your target up and cock it, with your foot pointed towards the target.

  3. Step 3

Extend the kick, moving your front hand down and alongside your kicking leg slightly for balance and bringing your back hand up as a floating guard, protecting your entire torso and head.

  4. Step 4

Push your kicking foot slightly forward, in front of the target and instead of driving the impact in a direct line, bring your foot around and “slap” the target with your heel. This is where the term “hook” comes from. Your foot actually follows a hooked trajectory.

  5. Step 5

Use the reverse hook kick to distract your opponent and set him up for a power kick. The reverse hook is an impact kick, designed to catch your opponent unaware as you redirect your leg from a sidekick position at the last instant.

  6. Step 6

Add a skip to your kick when you can consistently strike your target with the standing kick. The skip puts you within close striking range of an opponent. Shift your balance quickly and place your back foot behind your kicking foot. Be careful not to place your foot in front as you skip or your kicking leg will be in the wrong position.

  7. Step 7

Build forward momentum with your skip and use it to increase the speed and impact of your reverse hook kick. The skip for the reverse hook kick is the same one used for the skip sidekick.
