In the high-scoring world of video-game football defense is often overlooked. Being able to capitalize on QB mistakes is a vital aspect of prolonged success. The interception is a valuable tool for your skill set and if perfected can lead to short fields and higher scoring for your offense.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Nintendo Gamecube
  • Madden 08
  1. Step 1

Chose the right play. Interceptions can occur on any passing play, in any situation. However zone coverage, as opposed to man defense, lends itself more to interceptions because receivers appear to be more open than they are. By mixing zone and man coverage defenses your opponent will have a hard time identifying which receivers to throw to. One mistake - pick 6.

  2. Step 2

Get between the receiver and the ball. After the quarterback has released the ball it should be fairly easy to tell which receiver will be attempting to catch the ball--especailly on longer routes. In the default controller setting, tap X to control the defensive back closest to the targeted receiver. Guide the player directly in line between the ball and the receiver.

  3. Step 3

Go up to get the ball. Some interceptions will fall in your lap, but in most cases you need to direct the defensive player to catch the ball, rather than swat it down.Just as the ball crosses over your controlled defender's head, press and hold the Y button and he will leap in the air. Timing is critical here because if an interception is not made, your defender will often be out of position for a tackle.

Tips & Warnings
  • Players with high Catch ratings will be more successful at picking off passes.
  • If the ball is under thrown and the receiver has to stop to catch the ball, use the R button to turn your defender back towards the LOS as well.
