When anyone looks in the mirror, what he or she really wants to see is a solid six pack looking back. Slimming down around the waist is great for bathing suit season, but it also great for overall health. In fact, fat stored around the mid-section is some of the most dangerous fat stores in the entire body. While crunches and sit-ups will help tone those abs, these exercises alone are not enough. Getting rid of excess abdominal fat requires a complete fitness face lift. But in the end, the results are well worth the sacrifices.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Change your diet. Excess abdominal fat comes from somewhere, and that somewhere is a poor diet. Soda, candy, potato chips and fried foods are just a few of the treats that go right to the waist. Before you can even think about that six-pack, you must get rid of the fat, and keep the fat off.

  2. Step 2

Design a cardio routine. Once again, crunches alone will not shed excess abdominal fat. In fact, crunches alone will make your waist appear bigger because the muscles develop beneath the layers of fat. To shed that excess abdominal fat you must exercise at least three times a week at a pace that gets your heart pumping and the sweat flowing.

  3. Step 3

Design an abdominal routine. With a proper diet and a successful cardio routine, excess abdominal fat will begin to disappear. However, now it's time to tone those abs. Whether you join a class at your local gym or purchase an instructional video, abdominal exercises will help make that dream of a six-pack a reality.

  4. Step 4

Design a weight training routine. Cardio is not the only key to fitness. In fact, lifting weights is just as important, especially for keeping excess abdominal weight off. Building muscle helps to increase metabolism, and metabolism means burning more fat throughout the day, fat that could otherwise find its way to your waist.

  5. Step 5

Take vitamins. A good multi-vitamin will also help boost your metabolism and give you the energy needed to exercise. It'll also provide additional calcium, iron and other minerals you may not get enough of during regular meals. Remember, the more energy your body has, the more fat it will burn, and that means excess abdominal fat will be a thing of the past.

on 5/14/2008 Thanks for your comments but the following sentence seems wrong to me and needs a revision: "Remember, the more energy your body has, the more fat it will burn,..."
