When it comes to sailing, there is a lot that is involved once you are on the water. One of the techniques you need to learn before you set sail is how to "roll the jib." It's a two person job and can be a bit tricky if you haven't had much practice at it. Here's how to roll the jib on a sailboat next time you are on the high seas.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Place one person on the "roller furling line." This is the line attached to the opposite end of the jib. As the jib rolls, you will want this person to keep a bit of tension on this line so it provides a slow and steady rolling of the jib.

  2. Step 2

Put one person on the "jib sheet." This controls the edge of the jib. This person should also be standing downwind to perform this action.

  3. Step 3

Pull the jib out. The person stand down-wind on the jib sheet should face forward and pull the jib straight back. If you look toward the other end of the sailboat, you will see the jib unfurling. Continue pulling the jib out until the entire sail has been released.

  4. Step 4

Tie off the line to hold the jib out. Many sailboats have an automatic "catch" that will hold the jib in place until you are ready to put it back. But if you are on an older boat, you will have to tie the jib off.
