Though a sailboat relies mainly on a giant sail to jet across the seas, it also has a small motor on board to help assist that giant sail. It's a good thing to have in case you find a situation where you just don't have enough wind to propel you where you want to go. Here are some tips on how to check the engine oil on a sailboat.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Locate the engine on your boat. Many times on a sailboat, it is hidden below deck behind the pair of stairs that lead you below deck. This allows you easy access and the ability to work on the engine in covered shelter. Check your sailboat manual for the specific location on your boat.

  2. Step 2

Reach into your engine and pull out the dip stick. If you've ever checked the oil level in your car, the sailboat engine works the exact same way.

  3. Step 3

Wipe the dip stick with a spare rag so that it is completely clean.

  4. Step 4

Dip the stick back into its holder until it is fully inside.

  5. Step 5

Remove the dip stick and check the engine oil level. At the base of the dip stick, it is etched "add" or "full." If the oil level is within the "full" section, you are all set. If it reads, "add" take the time to add a little oil before you head out to sea.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always keep a spare quart of oil with you on the boat. That way if you happen to spring a leak out on the water, you can add a quart and make it back to the docks where you can have a repairman check the engine for an oil leak or loose seal.
