Rustic picture frames are made from wood or metal and look as though they've been handed down from generations. Made to look old and slightly dirty or rusty, these frames are great for country settings: cowboys, woods, barns or other earthy scenes. Follow the steps to learn how to pick rustic picture frames for your home.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Visit country stores or antique stores to find rustic picture frames at low prices. Shop yard sales and flea markets to find used items--rustic frames are meant to look old and used so you might as well pay less for them.

  2. Step 2

Find the best artwork for rustic frames. Use farm scenes, traditional fields or vases of flowers, autumn or winter nature scenes and southern cowboy or desert scenes with your rustic frame to bring out the design style.

  3. Step 3

Dress up a photo or painting with gold trim or other adornments. Consider putting two frame types together to create a unique look or finding a frame with a hint of color to bring out colors in the artwork.

  4. Step 4

Consider the physical size of the frame in relation to the artwork and your wall. Use a large frame with thick bordering for a large blank wall space. Add small, rustic picture frames to a fireplace mantle or a cluster of mis-matched, medium-sized frames against a wall to break up the space.

  5. Step 5

Use rustic frames to marry your current furniture and accessories with your artwork. Match the frame color with that of the barn in the photograph or with the beams of the ceiling. Work with your lamps, rugs, walls and furniture to create the look you want.

  6. Step 6

Recycle old frames by turning them into rustic art. Distress used wooden frames, mix stains or add a rusting agent to metal to turn frames you would have thrown or given away into new ways of showing off your artwork.

Tips & Warnings
  • Ask a professional frame specialist for advice on using rustic picture frames. If you don't know how to choose the best frame for your artwork, take your pieces into the shop and place them next to frames to see which look best.
