A shadowbox creates the illusion that a work is floating on a matte within a frame. A shadowbox is unique in that objects are set deeply within the frame rather than pressed up against a the glass of a traditional frame. A shadowbox can accommodate objects of many depths. The matte in a shadowbox forms the background.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Observe colors and surface qualities of the chosen work or objects. Choose a frame that compliments the item within the shadowbox. A wood frame might be best for baseball cards that show the green of the field and perhaps warm colors in the uniform of the player.

  2. Step 2

Choose a color matte that compliments both the frame and the work framed. Feature the work or objects with the matte, it should not overpower. Unify the frame and the item framed with a matte that is a neutral color such as beige.

  3. Step 3

Use the matte to create contrast against the framed art or object. Try a dark tone of beige, like brown, for a light item.

  4. Step 4

Consider the colors and texture of the room where the shadowbox will hang. Choose a matte to compliment the textures and colors in the room. Try to unify the elements within the shadowbox with the elements in the room.

Tips & Warnings
  • Coordinate a fabric matte with fabrics already in the room where the object will be displayed.
