In today's society, your appearance is your entree to the world. The moment someone sees how you are dressed, they make several snap judgments about who you are and what you do. Even if they're incorrect, it's simply human nature. Here are tips on how to match tie pins and clasps next time you're wearing a suit. It'll add the extra notch of sophistication.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Button down shirt
  • Tie
  • Pins or clasps (not both)
  1. Step 1

Match your suit, shirt and tie first. The first thing people will lay eyes on when they see you is your general appearance. It's most important when wearing a suit that it matches. Shoes should be considered as well. You don't want to be the guy at the party with a black suit and brown shoes. Stick with like-minded color schemes. This means mixing dark blues with light blues, dark grey with light grey. If you aren't quite sure, look at a mannequin in the store.

  2. Step 2

Determine whether you want to wear a tie pin or a tie clasp. They both serve the same function. The tie pin simply connects the front and back of the tie, while the clasp goes all the way through your shirt. If you have a problem with your tie flying out and up, go with the clasp. If the front and back of your tie merely separates, then go with the pin.

  3. Step 3

Think about what color tie pin or clasp best suits your attire. The tie pin and clasp should be an accoutrement. It should it no way be broad or brash or stand out. Common colors that blend well are silver and gold. Stay away from gaudy. Small and sleek will always be more tasteful.

  4. Step 4

Find a set of tie pins and cuff links. If you really want to dress with style, purchase a tie pin that has a matching design to cuff links. Found in French cuff shirts or tuxedo shirts, the cuff links take the place of a button at the end of your sleeve.

Tips & Warnings
  • Store your tie pins and clasps in their proper boxes. They are usually quite delicate and can break and separate easily. Take the time to put them in their corresponding boxes rather than just tossing them in your drawer.
