Checking your trailer's strength is critical. If you're carrying a load and a part comes lose or breaks off, it could cause an accident. Take a few minutes to inspect the strength of your trailer to make sure you stay safe on the road.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy
Step1
Check the frame to make sure all the struts are in good condition. If any struts are bent or warped, rebend them bent back into shape or replace them.
Step2
Examine closely all the welds along the seams. Make sure that cracks or splits don't compromise the trailer's strength. If you find any cracks, put a new weld yourself or pay a shop to repair it but make sure you have it repaired before using it again.
Step3
Remember to check the fender welds. If the fender comes off due to rust while on the road, you could lose your load and cause a serious accident. Replace any areas that have rusted.
Step4
Look at the areas where the axle springs mount. These areas are high stress points, so make sure that there's no rust present.
Step5
Walk around the trailer inspecting it in its entirety. Replace any rusted or cracked components.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you're buying a trailer, look for a frame that has gussets, as these add strength.
  • Trailers are designed to carry a certain load capacity. Carrying more than its capacity could cause an accident.
