How to Paint Zebra Stripes of Pottery Glaze

Adding a pattern to your mug or pottery box can make it look unique and stand out. A good pattern for items to go in children's rooms, to be used as gifts or for African themed pottery is the zebra stripe. A zebra stripe glaze is easy to accomplish with a little masking tape and a paint brush.

Instructions

    • 1

Take your roll of masking tape and tear off a strip. This strip doesn't need to be any particular length.

    • 2

Begin tearing the masking tape into smaller lines that end in a point. Try to make the strips of varying shapes and sizes, but remember to make them lines. If any of the pieces you tear off look square, just discard them.

    • 3

Place the bits of tape onto your pottery piece either vertically or horizontally. If you want vertical stripes, be sure to place some starting at the top and some that start on the bottom. This will give a wavy effect. If you're doing horizontal stripes, you need longer strips of tape. Make sure that you don't connect every piece of tape to another as you go around the pottery.

    • 4

Dip the paint brush in your paint or glaze and paint over the entire area, on the tape and off the tape.

    • 5

Pull the tape off the pottery, piece by piece. You don't need to wait for the paint or glaze to dry. Zebra stripes are meant to be a little messy and disheveled.
