Step 1
Press each key on the accordion and listen for the note that it plays. This works best if you have played long enough to know how each note should sound. Otherwise, having someone more experienced to guide you through the notes can help.

Step 2
Test each key while you open and close the bellows. This enables you to see if both sets of reeds within the bellows are in good working condition. Press one key while opening and then while closing and repeat with the next key.

Step 3
Go over both sets of keys on each side of the accordion. Start with the piano style keys and then work your way to the button keys. This can be tedious, so make sure no one is around to be annoyed by your testing.

Step 4
Tune or repair any reeds that don't sound right. It is best that you take it to an experienced professional for service like this, as improper tuning can permanently damage the reeds.
