A Jack Plane comes in handy when you are trying to refinish old wood floors while molding or building things like a table or chair from scratch. But when you are done with your Jack Plane, you want to properly store it. Here are some tips on how to store your Jack Plane next time you are finished working for the day.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Label your tool area. It doesn't have to be anything fancy. Masking tape and a marker will do just fine. But by labeling your tools, it allows other people in the shop to properly grab and return the tool to the right place. An organized shop is a productive shop.

  2. Step 2

Place a small piece of wood or other material under the front of your Jack Plane. The reason for this is that you want the blade to remain elevated off the shelf. This will help avoid corrosion, which will otherwise occur over time.

  3. Step 3

Lock your tools with a combination or key lock. It is always a good idea to lock your tools once you store them. Things like Jack Planes are quite sharp and could hurt kids or other people who aren't familiar with how to use the tool properly.

Tips & Warnings
  • Before storing your Jack Plane, make sure you clean it first. You can clean your Jack Plane by simply banging it against the inside of a trash can. If debris remains, using a pressurized air compressor should blow out any remaining particles.
  • Always supervise children and the uninformed when they are working with tools. Jack Planes are quite sharp on the underside and need to be handled correctly to avoid injury.
