The orchid is a beautiful flower that may be used as an accent or a focal point in a tropical arrangement. There are many different varieties of orchid, each one exotic and bursting with color. Orchids are versatile, long lasting and guaranteed to enhance any floral arrangement.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Purchase fresh orchids for your tropical arrangement. Buy orchids that are in individual tubes. Make sure each tube is at least half filled with water. Submerge the orchids in tepid water for a few minutes if they appear to be wilted.

  2. Step 2

Select a spray of orchids if you are using them as an accent to the tropical arrangement. Choose an exotic variety with large blooms if the orchid is the central focus of the arrangement.

  3. Step 3

Remove the orchid from the tube. Slice off the top portion of the stem if there are any buds missing from the top.

  4. Step 4

Cut the bottom of the stem cleanly at an angle. Determine the correct length of the stem according to the size of the vase or container. The vase should be at least half as tall as the flowers. Add marbles or pebbles to the bottom of the container to provide additional height if you have accidentally cut the stems too short.

  5. Step 5

Cluster spray orchids around the focal point of the tropical arrangement. Accent flowers have the most impact when they are massed together.

  6. Step 6

Add greenery or sprays of small flowers to a tropical arrangement where the orchid is the central flower. Arrange the orchids in a simple black vase to show off the vibrant color.

  7. Step 7

Continue to cut the stems at the bottom on a weekly basis. Change the water in the arrangement weekly as well.

Tips & Warnings
  • Cut the stems at various lengths to add dimension to your arrangement.
  • Use a sharp knife or pair of scissors to cut stems. A sharp, even cut allows water to flow easily into the stems. A ragged edge prohibits adequate absorption and the flowers will fade faster.
  • Change the water frequently if the arrangement is in a warm spot. Use very cold water to keep the flowers lasting a long time.
  • Cut orchids are long-lasting flowers. The waxier and thicker the flower, the longer it will last.
  • Local florists generally only provide a few types of orchids. For a full variety, locate an online florist that specializes in selling orchids.
  • Avoid direct sunlight, large bright lights and drafts from heating and cooling vents. A cooler location with indirect light is best.
