How to Wash Windows on a Ladder

If you must wash windows on a ladder, there are numerous precautions to take. When you're high enough to wash second story windows (and above), your center of gravity is far higher than normal—making falls more likely. Take extra care with your safety at all times when using a ladder to wash windows.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Position the ladder beside the building. Make sure the ladder is leaning on a solid surface that it can't mar. Stay away from window ledges that can give way and keep the ladder off the glass. If the building has aluminum siding, wrap a rag around the contact point of the ladder to make sure it doesn't scratch the siding. Check the footing to see that it's secure.

  2. Step 2

Climb straight up the ladder, carrying as little as possible in your hands. Make more than one trip if necessary. Keep your weight centered on the ladder. If you lean to either side, you shift your center of gravity and can easily fall.

  3. Step 3

Rest your cleaning supplies so you don't need to keep them in your hands. You can balance them against the window ledge, hang them in a bucket from your ladder or wear a workman's apron to keep your hands free of excess items.

  4. Step 4

Wet the window with your cleaning products. Scrub, and then squeegee them off. Pass materials such as rags and window squeegees from hand to hand behind your back. This helps prevent you from accidentally scratching the siding or leaning out far enough to lose your balance.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always examine ladders for damage before use.
  • Work with a partner and a cell phone. If you should have an accident, it's essential to get immediate help.
  • Never stand above the warning sticker on rungs close to the top. If you must stand above the sticker, get a taller ladder to do the job.
