After years of wear, tear and stormy weather, the weather stripping around a garage door needs to be replaced. Over time, stripping cements because of moisture and pressure making it difficult to remove. With a little elbow grease, it can be done.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Raise the garage door so it is out of the way before you attempt to remove the stripping. Be sure to lock or stabilize the door in place to prevent it crashing down on your when you begin the removal process.

  2. Step 2

Hold a household hammer in your dominant hand and a regular sized pry bar in your other hand.

  3. Step 3

Determine where you wish to begin the removal process. It is always easier to start from one end of the garage and work your way around in a complete arch around the door. This way, you can be sure you haven't left any spots out and the stripping may come off a little easier.

  4. Step 4

Wedge the tip of the pry bar behind the weather stripping. Be sure to get the bar far enough in that the entire width of the stripping is caught within the area of the bar. This ensures all of the stripping pulls off at once leaving no small bits and pieces to pick at later.

  5. Step 5

Tap the pry bar wedge with the hammer to secure it firmly in place. This also separates the stripping from the door track and ensures a clean removal.

  6. Step 6

Push the pry bar against the garage wall as leverage to prying off the stripping. Simply moving the pry bar back and forth should release the stripping. Be sure to remove the bar completely at the end of Step 6.

  7. Step 7

Repeat the same movement all the way around the door frame of the garage until all the stripping has been removed.
