Step 1
Know the size of the windows for which you are making the stop. While this doesn't matter in the actual making of the window stops, since they all tend to be the same size, it could be important later during the installation process. It is also a good idea to know how many window stops you need for the entire project. If you cut them all at once, it will make the installation process faster.

Step 2
Measure the depth from the window to the mold. The stop will need to be slightly smaller than this. For example, if the depth is 2 inches, the window stop will need to be 1-1/2 inches to 1 -5/8 inches. Use the thin strips of wood to make the window stops.

Step 3
Use a saw to cut a strip of the wood the size you need for the window stops. Try to cut four at a time, since you will need one for each side of each window, creating a frame around the window. This way you know they are the same size. It will save you in time and measuring.

Step 4
Flush the ends and cut a 45-degree angle off the ends. While it should be close and pretty good looking, it doesn't need to be exact. The window stops will be covered by molding pieces hiding any gaps.
