Things You'll Need:
- Dust mask or respirator
- Protective clothing including eye protection
- Drill (two handled, variable speed)
- 5-inch rubber backing pad
- #50 sanding disks
- #16 and #50 sandpaper
-
Step 1
Protect your skin by completely covering yourself. Wear long sleeves, long pants, head covering and protective eyewear. The dust from sanding will get in to your pores and cause you to itch if you aren't covered.
-
Step 2
Attach a 5-inch rubber backing pad and #50 sanding disk on the drill and start on the bottom of your surfboard. Place the drill on one end of the board.
-
Step 3
Allow the weight of the drill to push against the board. You do not need to push down on the drill when sanding. Work your way from one end of the board to the other.
-
Step 4
Keep the sanding disk flat while slowly moving the drill over the surface of the board. If there are areas where the disk won't lay flat, hand sand those areas. Also, don't power sand the rails of your surfboard.
-
Step 5
Blow and brush off the dust often. Run your hand along the surface of the board and make sure it feels even. Once you have sanded all the surface area that you can with the drill, it is time to hand sand the rails and any other missed spots.
-
Step 6
Rub your sandpaper over the rails and any spots the drill missed. Again, you do not want to over sand.
-
Step 7
Take your board in to bright sunlight and look for any shiny spots. Hand sand those spots to completely smooth out the bottom of your board.
-
Step 8
Flip your board over and sand the top. The top of your board does not need to be as smooth as the bottom.
