Step 1
Know which key words and phrases to look out for. Words and phrases like "business opportunity," "fire your boss!" "work from home" and "lead generation" are frequently used in network marketing jargon and promotional material.
-
Step 2
Look out for the religion connection. Some network marketing opportunities mix religious symbols and sayings into their promotional material. Whether it's a bible scripture on their email signature or a cross on their website, any religious symbols that would typically be deemed unprofessional in the business world are often (but not always) an indication of network marketing.

Step 3
Have a backup answer. You never know where someone might approach you to join a network marketing opportunity. It could be at a business luncheon, a friend's party or even at the bus stop. Have a backup answer prepared in order to avoid being caught off-guard. Even if your answer is something as simple as "I'm really not interested," be sure to state it firmly.

Step 4
Express little to no interest in the business opportunity. If you want to avoid network marketing in business, the worst thing you can do is ask a network marketer questions about their business opportunity or products. You can almost guarantee that your interest - whether genuine or feigned out of politeness - will be followed up by one or more emails, phone calls or visits.
