Audacity is one of the most feature-rich and user-friendly audio software applications available. On top of that, Audacity is open-source software, and free for users. You can edit MP3 files with Audacity in a number of ways, from reducing white noise to speeding up or slowing down the file.

Step1
Download Audacity from the Audacity at SourceForge website. Audacity is avaialbe on PC, Mac and Linux platforms. Be certain to download the platform appropriate for your computer. Install Audacity on your computer.
Step2
Decide what way it is exactly you want to edit your MP3 files with Audacity. You can speed up, slow down, remove white noise, insert and remove portions of the file and even change the bit rate. Make a list of the tasks you wish to complete during the editing process.
Step3
Open Audacity. From the "File" menu, select "Open." Navigate to the first MP3 file you want to edit. Select the file and click the "Open" button.
Step4
Highlight the section of your MP3 file you want to edit. If you want to edit the entire file, press "Control" and "A" on your keyboard.
Step5
Edit the MP3 file by selecting the appropriate option from the "Edit" or "Effect" menu.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make certain to save a backup copy of your MP3 file before you edit it with Audacity. As you edit, ave your changes frequently so you don't lose your progress.
