How to Pass Fifth Grade Math

In fifth grade math, students are learning measurements, graphs, how to borrow in subtraction and a little bit about fractions, light geometry, probability, ratios, easy statistic terms and percentages. Elementary math builds on itself. If the student and parent make sure that the student does well each year, it will be a natural progression to the next year for the student, because it is the same material just a bit more difficult.

    Instructions

      • 1

Pull out the students math textbook. This is always a good place to start, because these are the general themes and requirements for fifth grade math.

      • 2

Talk to the child's math teacher and try to find out how the student is doing compared to other students or the grade-level she's in. See if the teacher has any diagnostic tests he can provide for the student, to check the students math aptitude.

      • 3

Search diagnostic tests on the Internet if the teacher will not provide really good information for you. Once you understand where the student is having difficulties, you can focus on the areas in her study.

      • 4

Set aside time every evening for the child to do her math. Use the printed worksheets and the results of the diagnostic tests to work with the child to strengthen weak areas.

      • 5

Be sure the student has access to someone who knows more than she does so she can ask questions and gets answers. This can be a parent or a tutor.
