Detoxification (detox) is the body's method of eliminating impurities and toxins through the colon, liver, lungs, skin and kidneys. An excess of toxins in the body due to bad eating and living habits can lead to toxic overload. This build up of toxins can affect our overall health. The good news is that you can detox the body daily through diet, supplements and lifestyle changes.

From Quick Guide: Detox and Cleansing Diets
Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Drink plenty of pure water (distilled, filtered, etc). Eliminate coffee from your diet. You can drink green tea as a substitute.

  2. Step 2

Include fiber rich foods in your meals. Organic grains, fresh fruits and vegetables such as radishes, cabbage and beets are good to add to your diet. Eliminate refined sugars, alcohol and saturated fats from your daily meals.

  3. Step 3

Use vitamins and herbal supplements to promote a healthy liver. Taking vitamin C, dandelion root and milk thistle may help cleanse and protect the liver. A liver that is functioning properly is important for overall health.

  4. Step 4

Exercise each day to detox the body daily. Practicing yoga or qigong can be beneficial as many exercises in these systems can help with specific health problems (see Resources).

  5. Step 5

Relieve stress in your life by practicing meditation. Doing breath meditation for 20 minutes each day can calm you as well as oxygenate your body.

  6. Step 6

Remove toxins from your body by taking sauna baths or using detoxifying patches. You can also take a hot bath with baking soda and Epsom salts or sea salts to detoxify your body. Soak in the bath for 20 minutes and then gently scrub your skin; do this once a week.

  7. Step 7

Try hydrotherapy or dry brushing your skin to improve circulation. You can do hydrotherapy by alternating between hot and cold water when showering (see Resources). Dry brushing stimulates skin renewal through exfoliation.

Tips & Warnings
  • Consult your doctor before starting any detoxification program.
  • You should not use sauna baths, dry brushing or hydrotherapy if you have heart disease, diabetes or other serious health problems.
