How to Take a Screenshot From a DVD Using ScreenRip

Screen captures are easy. Taking screen captures from DVDs isn't. The image doesn't play back in a standard window, which means traditional screen capture options often don't work. ScreenRip 32, a freeware utility, makes it easy to capture the image from the motion.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step1
Download and install ScreenRip 32 on your computer. The application is freeware and downloads almost instantly. Open the application, when prompted.
Step2
Set the capture color depth to highest quality. You don't want to lose the fidelity of the DVD image by keeping the image file size down. You can set the color depth by choosing "Capture Images" from the Options menu.
Step3
Disable the cursor visibility. You don't want the cursor to show up accidentally in your capture. Check the Options menu and make sure "Include Cursor in Images" isn't checked.
Step4
Advance the DVD to the image you want to capture. Pause the DVD and use frame advance or reverse to find the exact frame.
Step5
Choose "Capture Rectangular Area" from the "Capture Image" menu. Your cursor will convert to a set of screen coordinates that change as you move the mouse.
Step6
Drag the cursor to select the exact area of the DVD window you want to capture. When you release the mouse, the captured image will appear in the ScreenRip window.
Step7
Save the image as a JPEG file to your hard drive. You can increase the image quality by choosing "Save Options" from the File menu Save As submenu.

Tips & Warnings

  • ScreenRip is freeware that was never offered as a full release version. The developer admits it's buggy and does not intend to do any further development.
  • Copying and distributing copyrighted images is illegal.
