If you've been listening to classical or country music your whole life, then it can be jarring when you try to incorporate some rock and roll into your listening repertoire. For whatever reason you want to make this change, then prepare yourself. Rock music that started in the 1950s is very different from the hard rock of the 1970s and which today's rockers may not even recognize.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Go with the classics when you begin your journey into rock and roll. By listening to artists such as Elvis and Chuck Barry, you can get a feel for the history of rock and how if grew from some of the music you may be more familiar with. Blues and bluegrass are the forerunners of rock.

  2. Step 2

Move on to rock groups that brought rock and roll to the forefront, such as the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. They may be referred to as classic rock on the radio, but all of their music is still being played and the members who are still alive continue to record and tour.

  3. Step 3

Consider limiting your listening to a specific genre or time period, like bands that feature female vocalists or 1980s rock and roll bands. If you have a favorite instrument like the guitar, then you could listen to bands that feature great guitar players. It can help you focus your efforts, since rock and roll is quite a diverse and large music genre.

  4. Step 4

Ask a friend who is a rock and roll fan to give you suggestions, based on what you might like. Maybe he can loan you some CDs or share his playlist. From your friend's suggestions, you can figure out what rock music you like or don't like.

  5. Step 5

Download a few songs at a time from various websites before investing in a collection that you may not enjoy.

  6. Step 6

Discover the difference between soft rock and hard rock by tuning into radio stations via satellite. The satellite stations identify the genre more so than commercial radio stations and remain truer to their category as well.

Tips & Warnings
  • Take care not to confuse hip-hop and rap with rock and roll music. Rock is more about the music than the lyrics. Rock music depends on guitar work, drums and rhythmic vocals, not rhyming and beats.
