You can name a Word document with a custom file extension in Word very easily. Developing custom file extensions will allow you to more easily organize your files into different categories. Read the steps below to find out how you can develop custom file extension in Microsoft Word.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Microsoft Word 2003
  1. Step 1

Start Microsoft Word 2003, and open a document from your files or create a new, blank document.

  2. Step 2

Continue to work on your document until you are ready to save the document for the first time. If you have already saved the document, you will need to rename the document in order to use a custom file extension.

  3. Step 3

Choose the "File" menu, and click "Save As" to open the "Save As" dialog box.

  4. Step 4

Use the "Save in" drop-down list to decide where you would like to save the document with a custom file extension. If needed, select the folder you want to save it in from the middle section of the "Save As" dialog box.

  5. Step 5

Type your file name and custom file extension surrounded by quotes in the "File name" text box near the bottom of the "Save As" dialog box. For instance if you typed "areahotels.trvl" the document "areahotels" would be saved with the file extension ".trvl."

  6. Step 6

Click the "Save" button in the "Save As" dialog box to save your Word document with the custom file extension and close the dialog box.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you don't include the file name and custom file extension in quotes in the "Save As" dialog box, the file extension ".doc" will be added to the end and will become the new file extension.
