Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Adobe Photoshop CS3
  1. Step 1

Start Adobe Photoshop CS3 and open up an existing document that contains layers that have been formed into a clipping group to which you want to remove at least one of these layers.

  2. Step 2

Open the Layers Palette, if necessary, by choosing the "Window" menu and clicking on "Layers." There will be small down arrows in front of the layers that are a part of the clipping group.

  3. Step 3

Select the layer from the Layers Palette that you want to remove from the clipping group by clicking on it. It will be highlighted in a dark gray once it is selected.

  4. Step 4

Choose the "Layer" menu and click "Release Clipping Mask" to release the layer from the clipping mask. If you have selected the base layer, then the entire clipping mask will be ungrouped at this time.

  5. Step 5

Continue to remove individual layers from the clipping group or choose the base layer and use the "Release Clipping Mask" to release the entire clipping group.

Tips & Warnings
  • The keyboard shortcut of ALT+CTRL+G will automatically release an entire clipping group once you have the base layer of the clipping group selected.
