Muay Thai simply translates to "Thai Boxing" and is what the Thai people call their form of martial arts. Muay Thai has a unique emphasis on close quarter fighting, making those skilled in its arts very effective in the use of their elbows, knees, feet and especially their fists.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

    Straight Punch

  1. Step 1

Get in the basic stance. In these instructions, we'll assume you're putting your left foot and arm forward and your right limbs back.

  2. Step 2

Shift your weight down into a bob. To punch from your right arm, bob right.

  3. Step 3

Adjust your stance as you begin the punch. Lift your right heel and begin straightening your bent right knee as you bring your right arm up, elbow bent and knuckles facing outward.

  4. Step 4

Bob left to punch with your left hand. Maintain the same stance. This time when you bob, your right heel comes up off of the ground and you keep it lifted as you extend your punch. Your left heel never comes off of the ground. Follow with the punch (elbow bent, fist turned to your face, knuckles toward your opponent).

  5. Hook

  6. Step 1

    Get in the basic stance.

  7. Step 2

Bob right for a right hook, then begin the punch.

  8. Step 3

Rotate your right side, especially your right shoulder, as you bring your right arm up so that it's horizontal, bent at the elbow and ready to devastate your opponent's face.

  9. Step 4

Lift your right heel up as you extend.

  10. Step 5

Do a left bob for a left hook, bringing your right heel up as you bob.

  11. Step 6

Set your right heel down, twist your left side and shoulder and bring your left heel up as you bring up your left arm and extend. When you set your right heel down to lift your left heel, turn your right foot slightly left so it's more in line with your body when you twist for that left hook.

  12. Uppercut

  13. Step 1

    Get in the basic stance.

  14. Step 2

Bob right, then lift your right heel as you turn the knuckles on your right arm toward your opponent and begin the upward movement needed for the punch.

  15. Step 3

Perform a left bob, lifting your right heel as you do.

  16. Step 4

Lift up with your left arm (knuckles out), straightening your right leg at the same time, and punch your opponent.

  17. Body Boxing Punch

  18. Step 1

Begin with the basic stance and move into a bob.

  19. Step 2

Bob to your right, bending both knees. Your body should be facing the right, then turn toward the front when you throw the punch.

  20. Step 3

Lift your right heel, bend your right knee toward the ground so your right shin is nearly parallel to the ground, and extend your punch straight into your opponent.

  21. Step 4

Lean forward to your left, shift your weight to your left leg and turn both feet slightly to the right (the right leg moreso than the left). Your body should look like a diagonal line.

  22. Step 5

Bring your left arm up as you bend your left leg. The two should move in unison. Your right heel also lifts as you throw this punch. After the punch, stand up, fists near your face for protection.

  23. Other Punches

  24. Step 1

Punch when you're in mid-air. Your whole body propels your fist, making the punch more powerful than a normal attack. Be careful, though--you're vulnerable when you land and your opponent is probably going to try to knock you off balance. This is a Jumping Punch.

  25. Step 2

Spin to hit your opponent. Usually you're going to use this when you've missed the first punch or kick and you need to turn around and swing your fist back at your opponent. This is a Spinning Punch.

  26. Step 3

Start with a block, make your one arm horizontal with your head and bent at the elbow, strike with the elbow, and block again. This is the Horizontal Elbow Strike.

Tips & Warnings
  • Aim your punch right underneath his ribs, toward your opponent's liver.
