When someone accesses a webpage, the computer hard drive saves and stores web browser history and other information. This information, also known as cache or Temporary Internet Files (TIF), improves web browsing speed and load time and allows users to view websites offline. Information includes website addresses, file types, file size, images and specific dates and times of last access. There are two ways to locate this information.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

View Internet Explorer History

Step1
Launch your Internet Explorer browser. Select "View" on the menu bar at the top of the browser.

Step2
Pick "Explorer Bar" from the various options. From the drop-down menu, select "History."

Step3
Locate the down arrow on top of the "History" box on the left side of your window. Click the down arrow to sort websites by "Date," "Site," "Most Visited" or "By Order Visited Today."

Step4
Select the desired website and click once, which expands the visited websites. Right-click the webpage of choice and choose "Properties" in the popup menu. A final box displays the last date and time of visit.

View Temporary Internet Files

Step1
Find more detailed web browser history by viewing TIFs. In Internet Explorer, select "Tools" from the menu bar at the top of the browser window, and choose "Internet Options."
Step2
Select "Settings" under the "Browsing History" section, and choose the "View files." This option opens a window containing the Temporary Internet Files, which can be quite large and may take a moment to open.
Step3
Sort your Internet Explorer history information by clicking on the column headings at the top of the window. You can sort them by date when you select the "Last Accessed" column.

Tips & Warnings

  • Keep in mind, depending on the browser version and operating system, actual steps may vary.
  • TIF settings are easy to configure, control and manage. To free up hard drive space, you can easily delete Temporary Internet Files.
