How to Remove DRM Protection From Apple Store Downloads

When you download music from Apple's iTunes Store, you download files that have Digital Rights Management protection, or DRM protection. This helps to prevent piracy and illegal sharing of copyrighted material. However, when you legally own the music or videos, DRM protection can prevent you from restoring lost files or moving them to another computer. Here's how to get around DRM protection on your media downloads.

Instructions

Make a CD or DVD of the files in question. In iTunes, create a playlist and burn it to CD. You'll lose the track information, but if you ever have to re-import them or move the files to another computer, you will be able to do it minus the DRM protection--most of the time. Sometimes this step is not enough, though.

Download third party software to help you accomplish the task. DRMDumpster, Seidai FairGame, and MyFairTunes are all options for this step. Download addresses change frequently; just do an Internet search with those terms to find the most updated versions available.

Install and run the software to remove the DRM protection from your Apple iTunes Store downloads.

Use iMovie HD to remove the DRM protection from iTunes Store downloads. This is only an option if you use a Mac (sorry, Windows users). In iMovie HD, create a new file and save it. Click the Media tab of the iMovie window, and then the Audio tab within that. Simply use the browser to find the song from which you want to remove DRM protection and drag it onto the timeline. Then drag a picture (any picture on your computer is fine for this) to another track on the timeline.

Export your file as an AIFF sound file. Drag the new file into iTunes.
