How to Invent a Freestyle Trick on a Skateboard

Like other board sports, skateboarding gives you a chance to express yourself with the way you ride. Even pro skaters develop individual styles, using different airs, grinds and grabs to give their basic routines personality and flair. The ultimate way to express your creativity while skating, however, is to invent your own freestyle trick.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Learn a good variety of standard freestyle skateboarding tricks. Much like a jazz pianist practicing scales and chords, practicing existing tricks gives you a foundation for improvising new ones.
Step2
Figure out what kind of tricks you're most comfortable performing. This helps you look for new variations on the old moves and develop your own style of skating.
Step3
Find a large patch of smooth asphalt or concrete where you can practice your tricks for as long as you want. An area without other distractions (passers-by, police officers, etc.) lets you concentrate solely on your tricks.
Step4
Invent a variation on one of your favorite existing tricks. By changing your footing or adding a grab you can completely change the aesthetic and stylistic appeal of the trick.
Step5
Check out other boardsports for moves you can use. Like a great writer or artist, you'll have more material to work with if you look outside your own sport for inspiration.
Step6
Be as creative and free-thinking as you can when skating. Don't overthink your moves. Instead, allow yourself to have fun and experiment with the skateboard's potential for tricks.
