How to Change Settings on a Windows XP Computer Without Being Detected

You can change the settings in Windows XP in order to suit your own tastes. However, a work-owned computer presents a few problems. Generally, the Information Technology staff doesn't want everyone changing settings. With that being said, there are few things you can do to change your settings without being detected.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Step1
Restart your computer, but hold down the F8 key when Windows XP starts to reboot. A screen will appear suggesting you use the arrow keys and make decisions. Scroll to the command that says "Safe Mode." Once you have selected that line, press "Enter."
Step2
Select "Yes" when the computer asks about "System Restore." This Windows XP step will save you headaches later by allowing you to return to the correct settings if errors occur when you change settings. The system continues to load a screen and next shows you are in safe mode.
Step3
Click on "Start," "User Accounts" and then "Create Account." If you do not see "User Accounts," your system may use the term "Settings." Select "Administrative Account" and restart your computer once again. You must log off in order for the new administrative account to show up.
Step4
Log in again through the newly created administrative account, after restarting the computer in the regular mode. Make the changes you want, and then restart Windows XP again. When it starts back up, press F8, choose "Safe Mode" again and hit enter.
Step5
Repeat Step 3, but select "Account Settings" instead of creating a new account. Remove unnecessary files—remove all files in that account if you do not want your actions detected. Restart your computer and allow it to boot up naturally.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use these steps to rid the "Restore" directory of virus changes you have corrected.
  • Do not try this act in a network setting, because it will not work.
  • The information in this article is to help you correct problems and is not for malicious use.
