Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Look for more coils and tighter coils.
A mattress will adapt to the shape of your body better if it has more coils. For a full sized bed, a good mattress should have at least 300 coils. If you choose a mattress with tighter coils, you'll get more back support. Look for at least five turns per coil when purchasing a new mattress.
Step2
Test a variety of mattresses before purchasing.
Visit stores that sell mattresses in your area. Lie down on a variety of mattresses and move around to simulate a night of sleep. If you have a partner, have them test the mattress also. After all, if it doesn't work for your partner, there's going to be a problem. It's important to choose a mattress that works for both of you.
Step3
Don't buy secondhand.
A mattress is one item that should never be purchased second hand. A previously used mattress has developed some memory for its occupants and has been subtly altered to conform to their shape. It will be difficult to get a used mattress to adapt to your unique specifications and body type.
Step4
Don't buy on the basis of price.
A mattress is an important investment in your long term health. Don't skimp on quality just to get a better price. When you consider that a good mattress will last ten years or more, you're going to be stuck with it for a long time. Choose wisely.
Step5
Consider the materials used.
Be sure to read the label to see what potentially toxic materials the mattress may contain. Some mattresses contain polyvinyl chloride which is thought to be harmful to health. Plus, you may have allergies to certain materials in the mattress. Consider an organic mattress if you're concerned about toxicity.
