Step 1
Dental hygiene as a regular habit for homeschooled children is more than a way to save money on dental bills or avoid wearing braces--it adds to the overall health of each student. In the long term, the good habits they learn today will bring each student a healthier tomorrow and they will teach their children the same good habits. If being a dentist seems to be too far reaching a goal, dental hygienists are just as important to a good dental office, and can be a good career choice.

Step 2
Dental hygiene schools train dental hygienists to be professionals who can assess a patient's needs for oral care, assist patients in preventative dental care and even perform certain routine duties such as cleaning teeth. Local dental hygiene schools normally perform dental care in the community in which they are located, and should be a parent’s first step in finding resources to prepare their homeschooled children for good preventative dental care.

Step 3
The goal of dental hygiene education is based around 4 principles: teeth cleaning, tongue cleaning, gum care and food and drink. Proper teeth cleaning aids in the removal of plaque and tartar to prevent cavities, gum disease and gingivitis. Tongue cleaning and gum care prevents bad breath and gum disease, including cavities between teeth. Food and drink are critical to preventive dental care by choosing the right foods to eat and what foods should be avoided.

Step 4
The field is full of specialties, and parents can learn which one best fits their child in order to guide their students to earn the appropriate degree. Dental schools will be more than willing to extend a welcome hand in preparing students for entrance by revealing all the details necessary for becoming a dentist. Specialties include dental public health, orthodontics (straightening teeth), pediatric dentistry and a lot more.
