A “transition” in video editing is a visual device placed between edits that can help a sequence move between cuts, shots and scenes. You will probably mostly use simple cuts to edit from shot to shot, but in other cases you may need to transition using fades, crossfades or more stylized effects. The Adobe Premiere Pro program has many transitions that you can apply to your sequence, including dissolves, wipes, slides and zooms. However, once you add transitions to your sequence it is still possible to adjust and fine-tune them.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

If you find your transition is not aligned properly, zoom in on your Timeline panel. Next, click on and drag the transition to reposition it to the desired location.

  2. Step 2

You can also align the transition using the Effect Controls panel. Double-click on the transition from within the Timeline panel to open the Effect Controls panel.

  3. Step 3

Go to the Effects control panel menu and click the Show/Hide Timeline View to open the Ruler. While still in the Effect Control panel, position the pointer over the center of the transition until the “Slide Transition” icon appears and drag the transition to the intended position. You can magnify the time ruler for greater and greater control.

  4. Step 4

To place an entire transition on a clip that precedes an edit point, drag the transition to the left and align its end point to the edit between the clips.

  5. Step 5

To place an entire transition on a clip that follows an edit point, drag the transition to the right and align its beginning point to the edit between the clips.

  6. Step 6

To place unequal parts of a transition in each clip, drag the transition slightly either left or right. You can magnify the time ruler for greater and greater control of the transition edit.

  7. Step 7

You can also choose from options in the Alignment pop-up menu that you will find in the Effect Controls panel.
