Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Camera
  • Tweezers
  • New Focusing Screen
  • Electric air pump
  • Rubber Air Blower if you don't have the electric one
  • Piece of lint-free microfiber cloth
  1. Step 1

Call your camera customer service and place an order for the new replacement Focusing Screen. If they do not sell the parts ask them about the part number of your replacement Focusing Screen. Be sure to tell them exact model of your camera. Remember different models have different types of Focusing Screen. Write down the part number and search this part on Ebay, amazon or Google it.

  2. Step 2

Choose a clean and dust-free area of your room. Spread out a clean sheet, and put all your stuff on it.

  3. Step 3

Remove your lens from the body of the camera, and cap the lens. Now, inspect the camera. Look for any scratches, dirt, grease and other signs of wear.

  4. Step 4

Locate and identify the focusing screen. Most of SLR cameras have it just above the mirror. Focusing Screen and the mirror form an angle with each other.

  5. Step 5

Locate the metal clip that holds the Focusing Screen in its place. There is usually a small slit present that accommodates a sharp object such as the end of a tweezers to press the metal clip and release the Focusing Screen from its position.

  6. Step 6

Put the camera aside and carefully open the new Focusing Screen. DO NOT touch it with your hands. It has a small projection that is meant to be used to hold it with tweezers. If at any point you must hold the Focusing Screen with your hands hold it ONLY at the edges without touching the face or back of the screen.

  7. Step 7

Now take the camera in your left hand and carefully press the metal clip to release the old Focusing Screen. You might have to manipulate a little bit before it pops out.

  8. Step 8

When the Focusing Screen comes out note carefully the configuration of the screen because this is exactly how you should install the new one. Most of the times there will be a small metal frame that will pop out along with the Focusing Screen. Note its configuration too. Usually it is present behind the Focusing Screen.

  9. Step 9

Install the new screen carefully maintaining the configuration of the old sceeen. Make sure to place the metal frame in its proper position as well. Use tweezers to close the metal clip back in its position.

  10. Step 10

Clean the camera by blowing air few times into the body of the camera using an electric blower or the rubber blower prior to mounting the lens back on the body. Blow the focusing screen and the mirror in particular.

Tips & Warnings
  • Do not touch the Focusing Screen with your hands.
  • Do not use cloth to wipe or clean the screen. Only use air blower to remove the dust particles.
  • Take all precautions not to damage the sensor of your SLR.

on 4/30/2009 in reply to 'du9gvu': yes there is a way. buy a manual rubber air blower. i recommend 'Giottos Rocket Air Blaster'. you can buy it from ebay or amazon. it is very effective in removing the dust from focusing screens. if that does not work buy a new fucussing screen from nikon and install it carefully as written above. it is not very expensive part.

on 4/18/2009 Hi there, I am so glad I came across your posting and it's really informative. I have a question relating to the focusing screen. I made a mistake of using a cotton swab to clean the focusing screen and now there are streaks all over, is there a way I can clean up the streaks or replacing the focusing screen is the best option for now?
