Things You'll Need:
-
Step 1
Think about the role you are auditioning for and keep in mind what the auditioner is asking for. Is it a character role, a classical leading role, or a pop audition? Keep in mind the type of audition you are going for when choosing your piece. You want to taylor your audition slightly towards that role, to show the director that you have what the role takes. You also want to make sure you follow the directions.
-
Step 2
After you have considered what type of role you are auditioning for, start to make a list of songs that you like to sing and are good at. If you are not familiar with any songs suited for the role you are auditioning for, browse online or get a general song book and flip through it.
-
Step 3
After you have made your list of possible songs, start to narrow it down by selecting ones that show you off the most in the least possible amount of time. Often times, you are only allowed sixteen bars to sing, so you need to pick a song that can show you off in that amount of time. Keep in mind however, that you want to pick something you are familiar with and can sing on a good or bad day. Don't pick a song that you hope you can do rather than know you can do.
-
Step 4
Make sure that you also connnect with and like the song you have chosen. Keep in mind that directors not only want to hear a gorgeous voice, but also want to see a genuinely good performance.
-
Step 5
Finally, listen to the song or songs that you have narrowed your list down to. Download them off of itunes, and make sure you can sing them as well as you think. If you are satisfied with your choice, or need a tie breaker, sing the songs for a family member and get their opinion.
