Step1
Time is the master.
Do not expect an easy or fast remedy for escaping the slums. You can get rich quick and get poor even quicker if you wish, but if you want a lasting remedy, it will cost you. Prepare your mind and commit yourself to getting out of poverty no matter how long it takes.
Step2
Know thyself.
Ask yourself exactly what it is you want. If you don't know what you want, there is no possible way for you to make a plan to accomplish it. Even though poverty is a technically a lack of financial capital, your state of poverty may also stem from a lack of foresight or vision. "Without vision, the people perish."
Step3
Find out how to get out.
You may find out there are several people out there that could easily provide a way out, a "tunnel" for which you could use to escape the ghetto; however, the smart ones will only give you a shovel for which to dig your own tunnel. Your confidence, passion and intelligence can be crucial to your ability to build and network with people who have what you want and can teach you how to get it.
Step4
Leverage your resources(a).
Leveraging your resources can propel you toward achieving your goals just because you are poor. If you need money, see if you qualify for a cash assistance program. If you need food, check out food banks. Don't be prideful, and also don't get comfortable. Many people go through hard times and there is no shame in that. If you tell yourself that this is temporary until you can accomplish your plan, it will be so.
Step5
Leveraging your resources (b).
Again, leveraging your resources can help you achieve your goal, simply because there are certain resources that are only available to people in your disposition. Want to go back to school? You may be able to go to college for FREE. Fill out a fafsa and see what you qualify for. Check out a H.O.P.E. scholarship, the determining criteria for receiving this money is based on NEED. Want to start a business, check out the Small Business Administration, they have all types of assistance.
Step6
Birds of a feather.
As you gravitate towards people who are educated, are knowledgeable and are hopeful about your potential, disengage from negative, unproductive people. In many cases this form of company can cause lasting problems, discourage your efforts, and influence you to make irreversible mistakes. Crabs in a bucket pull each other down. Leave them alone.
