Icy steps are not only a nuisance, they can be dangerous to any unsuspecting person using them. Severe head and back trauma may occur due to slip and fall injuries making the homeowner liable for medical costs. This scenario can be avoided easily through a little prior home maintenance on your part.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Salt
  • Shovel

Step1
Take regular table salt. It's inexpensive, so use plenty and sprinkle heavily on each step without actually placing your feet on the steps due to the likelihood of having an accident. Let the salt sit for a few minutes. After about 10 minutes and there are no visible signs of the ice melting; reapply the salt, more freely this time. Wait for a few minutes for the salt to start melting the ice.
Step2
Take a shovel, either square-nosed or pointed, and start lifting the ice from the step that is closest to you, again without actually stepping on the step until all the ice has been removed. Methodically shovel each step absolutely clean of ice. There should just be water underneath the ice and it is okay to step on that as long as it hasn't turned to ice.
Step3
Repeat Steps 1 and 2 each morning that ice accumulation on your steps makes them a danger to use for you and anyone visiting your home. A little time spent doing this chore will save your visitors a lot of pain and anguish and it will save your homeowners insurance.

Tips & Warnings

  • Always wear boots with good gripping power during the winter months.
  • Always take precautions when using steps; never run down steps.
