Welding is a growing career field as more and more companies seek experienced welders to fill the positions of baby boomers nearing retirement. While it is possible to learn welding on the spot there is a lot for someone to practice and perfect before they are experts. This is why it is often beneficial to find other ways to understand the various processes of welding.

1. Read about the different processes involved in welding. Mig, Tig, Stick, gas, arc and more are all different types of welding, and you can learn more about each one as well as see pictures of the types of welds by spending time reading and learning on the internet or through a book.

2. Take a welding class as this can help you learn and master the various welding processes. These are often short-term lasting only a few days or weeks. However, they can often teach a variety of different processes or help an individual become specialized in a specific process.

3. Enroll in a welding program that teaches you the different types of welding as well as prepares you for employment in the welding field. Many community colleges and vocational schools offer these types of programs, which can take anywhere from a few months to a few years to complete.

4. Shadow an experienced welder in order to learn about the processes involved in welding. Shadow opportunities may come from an actual job site, or you can simply observe and learn from them in the evenings or weekends as they work on welding projects in their own garage or on their own time.
