Almost half of America suffers from GERD, the most common gastrointestinal condition. GERD is the occurrence of stomach acids escaping up into the esophagus, creating a burning sensation (heartburn). GERD is most commonly caused by either a malfunction in the lower esophageal sphincter, or a hiatal hernia. Most cases can be managed by medicine and a change in lifestyle. Other times, surgery is needed to ease the discomfort and progression of damages that result from GERD.

Know the facts. Surgery has never been a popular choice for GERD treatment as the highly invasive procedures weighed too heavily against the condition. With the recent introduction of a minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery and the good results reported by patient and doctor, however, surgery to treat GERD is becoming more common.

Understand laparoscopic surgery benefits. The idea of the surgery is about the same as before but the use of the laparoscope which magnifies its subject the surgeon is able to be more precise, do less damage, spill less blood and make small incisions. The result is less complications and shorter recovery time.

Know the technique. .The technique of the surgery involves loosely wrapping the stomach around the esophagus and securing it with silk sutures. Silk sutures are also used to close the esophageal hiatus down around the esophagus. This stops the hernia ion of the repair into the chest.

Prevent and nutritionally treat GERD. With or without surgery, a healthy diet and regular exercise are powerful treatments for GERD. Keep a journal and careful notes of how effectively this works for you. Tell your doctor of your plans in this area, and seek their advice. This can be a great compliment to the surgical treatment.
