A strong practice will determine whether you're ready to become a teacher or not. Typically, a few years of practice before you become an instructor is required. Then, once you've decided to embark on the teacher training experience you'll need to follow these steps.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging

Things You’ll Need:

  • Time to research studios and take classes
  • Between $2,000 to $3,000 for teacher training courses

Namaste!

Step1
Check out studios where you might be interested in enrolling in a teacher training. Before you sign up, set aside time to meet with the instructor that will be teaching the course. Make sure you feel comfortable with the instructor and that there is a connection. This will be important as you spend long hours together and discuss intimate topics.
Step2
Make sure the studio or ashram where you're getting certified is part of the Yoga Alliance.
Step3
Do you have the funds? Make sure you have some money set aside for the teacher training. Know that it takes a while to establish yourself in the yoga world and not only will the teacher training be costly (typically $2,000 to $3,000) but the year or two after you complete the training will also be an "investment" period.

Signed up...now what?

Step1
After you've enrolled in a teacher training, you will begin to learn many things about yourself, your body, your practice and the yoga world. Throughout the training, take in-depth notes. They will come in handy once you start to teach.
Step2
When you're halfway through teacher training and you're sure you want to teach, start to scope out studios where you might want to teach.
Step3
Once you receive your certification, sign up with the Yoga Alliance as one of the registered teachers. This will be valuable when starting to interview with studios or individuals.
Step4
Be sure to get insurance. Some studios offer insurance, others do not. Research insurance plans and policies.

Tips & Warnings

  • Practice before you preach/teach!
  • Do your reserach and connect with other instructors before enrolling in a teacher training.
  • There are various types of yoga and teacher trainings. Be sure you want to teach vinyasa before signing up for the teacher training.
